Job Summary: A Radiation Therapist administers radiation treatments to patients as prescribed by a radiation oncologist. They are responsible for ensuring the accurate delivery of radiation therapy while prioritizing patient care and safety throughout the treatment process.
Key Responsibilities:
Treatment Planning:
Collaborate with radiation oncologists and medical physicists to develop treatment plans tailored to each patient's condition.
Patient Preparation:
Position patients correctly for radiation treatment sessions, ensuring accuracy and reproducibility in alignment with treatment plans.
Equipment Operation:
Operate and maintain radiation therapy equipment, including linear accelerators, to deliver prescribed radiation doses to targeted areas while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues.
Radiation Delivery:
Administer radiation treatments according to established protocols and treatment plans, following strict safety procedures to protect patients and staff from unnecessary radiation exposure.
Patient Education:
Educate patients about their treatment procedures, potential side effects, and self-care techniques to manage symptoms and maintain their overall well-being during and after treatment.
Documentation and Record-Keeping:
Maintain accurate and detailed records of treatment sessions, patient progress, and any observed side effects or reactions to radiation therapy.
Quality Assurance:
Participate in quality assurance programs and routine equipment checks to ensure the safe and effective delivery of radiation therapy treatments.
Collaboration:
Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including radiation oncologists, nurses, medical physicists, and dosimetrists, to coordinate patient care and optimize treatment outcomes.
Emergency Response:
Respond promptly and effectively to emergency situations, including equipment malfunctions or adverse patient reactions during treatment sessions.
Continuing Education:
Stay abreast of advances in radiation therapy techniques, equipment, and safety protocols through ongoing training and professional development activities.
