Description

The mission of the Canizaro Center for Catholic Studies is to provide Catholic formation and ministry primarily to Loyola's undergraduate community. In addition, it seeks to strengthen the Catholic identity of the university through academic and formational programs and classes for students, faculty and staff, including an undergraduate interdisciplinary minor. A key

component of Catholic Studies is that it provides the space for the building of a community centered around Catholic faith and culture for both Catholic and non-Catholic students, as well as leadership opportunities in service to Loyola and the broader New Orleans community. All Catholic Studies' staff participate in this mission to varying degrees, according to their primary

responsibility. This position is unique that it is a full-time position that includes a part-time extraordinary faculty appointment. The expectation is that the Associate Director for Faith Formation & Outreach would teach two courses per semester that would count toward the Catholic Studies minor. In addition, this person would be responsible primarily for planning and

implementing the weekly Catholic Studies night programs and organizing retreats and service opportunities. The job requires this individual to work as a member of a dynamic, creative and collaborative team of three full-time employees. As a member of the Canizaro Center staff, this person would also represent the center at both university events, and events that would

provide opportunities for outreach and networking in the greater New Orleans community.This person would also be the main contact for many of our guest speakers and service partners, requiring good, professional, interpersonal skills. Other duties would be negotiated as needed, and also based upon the particular skill set of the person hired for this position. A

"ministry of presence" to the students, collaborators, volunteers and benefactors is also integral to the work. A working knowledge of and enthusiasm for Loyola's Catholic and Jesuit identity is also essential and should be apparent in the fulfillment of the varied duties of the position.

Examples of Duties

Creating, organizing, and implementing formation opportunities for students, with primary emphasis on weekly Catholic Studies' nights Teaching two undergraduate courses per semester that would count toward the Catholic Studies minor Collaborating with student leaders and the Catholic Studies team in planning and leading student retreats Planning and implementing one half-day or day-long service event each semester. Developing and implementing a week-long domestic or international service immersion trip for students Assisting in the organization of special events like the annual Loyola Week, and Catholic Studies sponsored conferences, lectures, etc. Working collaboratively with other Catholic Studies staff members in all areas of service to the students and university community, serving also as a liaison with Student Life and Ministry Helping in the promotion of Catholic Studies with existing students, incoming students and potential students, serving as a liaison with University Admissions Sharing in the mentorship of student leaders, along with other members of the Catholic Studies team Assisting the Catholic Studies director with the advising of students minoring in Catholic Studies Exercising a "ministry of presence" with the students. Engaging in occasional spiritual conversation with students, or providing guidance consistent with one's credentials (or lack thereof) in areas such as counseling or spiritual direction Overseeing the organization and development of Bible Studies groups and leaders Other duties as assigned

Typical Qualifications

Master's Degree or Above in Catholic Theology, Religious Studies, Ministry or a related field A working knowledge of Catholic faith and doctrine, and Catholic social teaching Two years of teaching experience, preferably of undergraduate students Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and basic graphic design Superior written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate with tact and courtesy at all times Ability to adjust to the changing needs of Catholic Studies Ability to promote a student-centered campus culture and reinforce teamwork within Catholic Studies and in collaboration with academic departments, and the university as a whole Ability to work independently and juggle priorities Comfort and confidence serving as a public representative of Loyola University's Canizaro Center in the broader community, in New Orleans and beyond Some familiarity with the pastoral needs and challenges of young adults within a diverse university culture Experience with assisting with and developing programs for students and young adults Some availability nights and weekends, as needed Given the nature of the position as one specifically involving formation of students in the Roman Catholic faith, and the knowledge of the faith required to fulfill the duties of the position, the job requires one to be a practicing Roman Catholic
