Who we are looking for:
The Vice President, Education, Science & Professional Development (VP, ESPD) provides expert leadership for all ASCO continuing education, science, and professional development activities for ASCO members, oncologists, and healthcare professionals globally, as envisaged by the Society’s Strategic Plan and goals of the department. This exciting strategic and management role will provide mentorship and direction to ESPD department staff and work collaboratively with ASCO leadership and staff across departments, as well as the organization’s volunteer leaders, to further the mission, strategic initiatives, and service to all members. The VP, ESPD will drive innovation and foster the adoption of new educational tools and technologies.
The VP, ESPD works closely with educational, programmatic, and scientific leaders to create and maintain a comprehensive and state-of the-art portfolio of activities. The VP, ESPD develops and represents strategic multiyear plans, including budget and workforce allocation for the department, that closely align with ASCO’s strategic plan. This leader will serve as ASCO’s strategic representative on the committees of ASCO’s co-sponsored meetings and the ASCO Education Council. This leader will also provide guidance and direction to the committees of the Annual Meeting and leadership development programs. The VP, ESPD serves as staff lead in Board strategic planning for educational, CME, professional development and education/training related business development programs and activities and oversees the implementation of strategic initiatives as defined by the Board.
The VP, ESPD builds and maintains a department culture of learning that fosters a growth mindset, inspires, and motivates staff to take risks, learn from mistakes and creatively consider new approaches, ideas, and programs. The VP, ESPD must build and maintain strong relationships and open communication with key stakeholders including society and staff leadership, the Board of Directors, members, educators, and other healthcare-related professionals and organizations.
The VP, ESPD must maintain expertise in learning science, digital education, and artificial intelligence to continuously improve ASCO education programs. This entails, in part, training of faculty and ASCO staff to appreciate and assimilate learning science strategies in education planning and delivery. As an expert and thought leader, the VP, ESPD will play an active role in building and carrying out ASCO’s many collaborative efforts with other professional societies and education organizations. As a leader and mentor, the VP, ESPD will work to assure that staff receive clear expectations, needed resources, career opportunities, mentoring, and coaching.
This is an Alexandria, VA based position. Key Responsibilities Oversee planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of continuing medical education and ensure ASCO follows ACCME accreditation standards for CME activities
Recommend policies and procedures to CEO and Board of Directors to ensure ASCO CME programs are at highest quality level
Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of professional development programs for oncology trainees and practicing oncologists at all career levels
Oversee budgeting, decision-making, policy-making, hiring, and staff management at the organization and department levels
Participate in Board strategic planning for educational and CME issues and implementation of department objectives and programs in a timely manner
Oversee management, planning, organization and production of educational and scientific content for all of ASCO’s scientific and educational meetings
Manage and lead ASCO’s collaborations around education and professional development and the deployment of new educational technologies, including business planning
Guide and participate in multiple volunteer committees and planning groups for educational activities.

Experience and Professional Qualifications
Education
BS, BA, M.D or D.O. in a related scientific field required; PhD or other advanced degree or related field is desirable.
20+ years of development and implementation experience related to medical and/or oncology education and professional development, including direct management of staff experience, with a medical, scientific and/or clinical affairs background.
Educational background in (or ongoing study of) learning science
Clinical study/research experience strongly desired
Travel
11-20 days/year
