Position Summary:
Plays a pivotal role in bringing new products to market by engineering the product to meet the needs of the consumer while being manufacturable within Leatherman’s factory and supply chain. The engineer provides continuous improvement support for Leatherman’s existing products in partnership with Product Management, Manufacturing, Quality, and Sourcing. The engineer supports business objectives and goals related to Safety Quality Delivery Cost (SQDC) and helps to lead and mentor the team under the guidance of the Lead Engineer. The engineer works towards advancing their skillset in project management, leadership, statistical analysis, and advanced modeling and simulation.
Essential Functions:
Design and implement new products, product variations, and product enhancements utilizing CAD, tolerance stack-ups, GD&T, DFMEA, statistical analysis, performance test results, and user review feedback.
Understand consumer needs through Product Management collaboration and customer knowledge.
Clearly communicate project action items, risks and progress to management and team.
Design and coordinate construction and use of capable testing fixtures that verify a design’s ability to meet functional objectives.
Develop and maintain strong working relationships with Manufacturing, Sourcing, Quality, and Product Management to ensure the product meets cost, quality, and schedule targets.
Effectively and thoroughly create and update project documentation.
Understand and address non-conforming material as it relates to the impact to the consumer.
Identify and work with 3rd parties, as needed, to complete projects, such as prototype builds or testing.
Identify problems and utilize methodical problem-solving methods to present solutions that address root cause.
Provide leadership and mentorship to other engineers and cross-functional teammates.
Manage small, cross-functional projects within the organization.
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering is required.
Five or more years of mechanical design experience preferred.
Proficiency in modeling and drafting is required, SolidWorks experience is preferred.
Proficiency using engineering tools such as FEA, DFMEA, and DMAIC.
Demonstrated ability to set and communicate tolerances using GD&T.
Demonstrated ability to utilize advanced statistics in problem-solving.
Experience leading projects from conception to implementation.

The employee frequently lifts and/or moves up to 5 lbs., and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 55 lbs. The employee frequently pushes/pulls an average of 40 lbs., and occasionally pushes/pulls up to 70 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
Working Conditions/Physical Hazards
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office environment, and occasionally exposed to production environment. Work area is well lit and air conditioned. All employees are expected to adhere to Company safety policies and wear personal protective equipment when exposed to work areas or performing tasks where it is required. Position can be hybrid or in-office setting based on business need. Employees working hybrid must be flexible to work in-office as required for work assignments, meetings, etc.
