The University of Memphis seeks an experienced, dynamic, innovative, and visionary leader to serve as the Dean of the College of Education. Expanding upon a strong foundation, the Dean will raise the College’s national and global visibility in the areas of teaching, teacher preparation, educational leadership, counseling, educational psychology, research, and community engagement. Building on the College’s achievements in student success, academic programming, research productivity, and fiscal stewardship, the new Dean will have an opportunity to expand partnerships, outreach, and interdisciplinary collaborations.
The Dean should be an inspiring, fiscally astute strategic leader committed to excellence in research, scholarly productivity, teaching, and service. The Dean will expand upon partnerships across the University, including University Schools, as well as with the broader community to facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration and encourage innovation to meet the education and workforce development needs of the state and region. The Dean provides leadership to meet teacher licensure and program accreditation standards and adherence to regulatory requirements. Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost, the Dean is the chief academic officer for the College of Education and works with faculty and staff to implement a shared vision, mission, and goals. The successful candidate will be forward thinking, demonstrate a commitment to shared governance, build and expand strategic partnerships, raise funds to support the College and its initiatives, and work collaboratively with a variety of local, state, and national stakeholders and alumni.
The Dean provides strong leadership in the planning, development, and implementation of all College programs, curricula and policies. Specific responsibilities include approval of hiring, tenure, and promotion decisions; effective resource management; outreach activities coordination; research support, including aggressive pursuit of external funding; and College development. The Dean has primary budgetary responsibility and accountability for the College and its programs. The Dean should also be recognized as a community leader in the improvement of urban education in our region.
Qualifications
The Dean of the College of Education must have demonstrated significant achievement in leadership, scholarly activities, and administration. The Dean should be a transformative change-agent who is committed to shared governance and open communication. Specifically, candidates must demonstrate evidence of the following qualifications:
A doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher education and qualifications to hold professorial rank in one of the departments within the College
A distinguished record of research, grant funding, and scholarship
The energy and vision to lead the College in its drive to increase excellence
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for relating effectively with the varied constituencies of the College, University, and larger community
A strong commitment to an inclusive academy, including diverse, multicultural and global perspectives
A record of responsible administrative experience and achievements
A commitment to excellence for advancing the educational programs in the College, research opportunities, and innovative program development
Experience, expertise, and enthusiasm for working in urban education and teacher preparation for urban districts/settings
Understanding and willingness to collaborate with partner districts and professional communities represented by programs in the College and their prospective teacher candidate needs
The College
The College of Education is dedicated to creating and fostering a culture of belonging, access, and inclusiveness for students, faculty, staff, and partners. Faculty and staff are committed to providing relevant, innovative, and responsive instruction and services to prepare graduates who engage in high-impact research, teaching, learning, and leadership. Additionally, the College’s programs must remain responsive to the needs of our students and constituents so that graduates possess the knowledge, skills, and attributes to address the needs of a changing and multicultural society. The College consists of four major academic units – the Department of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership; the Department of Leadership; and the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Research, and the Center for Research in Educational Policy (CREP). Each unit has talented teaching and research faculty members with expertise in a variety of major areas of study, including graduate programs serving students across the state and region who are pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees and graduate certificates.
