Job Description
PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
The Network Engineer configures, deploys, tests, maintains, monitors and troubleshoots the enterprise network components to provide a secure, high performance network. Supports the stable operation of the in-house computer network (LAN/WAN infrastructure). This includes planning, designing, installing, configuring, maintaining, and optimizing all network hardware, software, and communication links while ensuring minimal network downtime. The person will also diagnose, resolve, and document hardware and software network problems for local, off-site and/or remote locations in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide end user training and support where required. This position is a member of a 24/7/365 global department.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Supports development and implementation of networking projects and new technology installations
Conducts research on network products, services, protocols, and standards in support of network procurement and development efforts, evaluate and recommend for purchase networking hardware and software products
Writes technical specifications for purchase of networking hardware and software products
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of networking contracts and supervises contract-based installations
Installs, configures, tests, maintains, monitors, and troubleshoots end user workstation hardware, software, networked peripheral devices, cabling, and networking hardware and software products
Maintains servers, including e-mail, print, and backup servers and their associated operating systems and software
Maintains security solutions, including firewall, anti-virus, and intrusion detection systems
Maintains all network hardware and equipment, including routers, switches, hubs, and UPSs
Monitor and test network performance and provide network performance statistics and reports
Receives and respond to incoming calls, pages, and/or e-mails regarding network connectivity problems
Performs on-site analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex network problems for a variety of end users, and recommends and implements corrective hardware and software solutions, including off-site repair
Recommends, schedules, and performs network improvements, upgrades, and repairs
Practices network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory
Prepares, maintains, and adheres to procedures for logging, reporting, and statistically monitoring network data
Liaise with, and provides training and support to help desk support staff on network issues
Performs system backups and recovery, and server and security audits
Provides guidance to junior members of the team as required
Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Required working knowledge, basic skills, and the ability to understand and follow simple written or oral instructions
Hands on experience with Cisco Enterprise networking solutions, VOIP environments, and an understanding of WAN technologies and Content networking
Ability to help others in clarifying somewhat complex problems; adapts or modifies established approaches, identify and select appropriate tools, data, and analysis techniques to diagnose problems and develop solutions, balances competing short- and long-term goals within one's area in alignment with the larger area's direction and objectives
Ability to lead groups through the process of problem solving, soliciting ideas and opinions to form recommendations or action plans
Ability to work to identify and solve issues in the group
Ability to write and present reports, contracts and/or proposals for internal and/or external audiences
Ability to interpret other viewpoints and assimilates them into work processes, the ability to convey technical, administrative knowledge or complex information to others in non- technical terms
Ability to assist in formulating recommendations on difficult problems
Ability to seek opportunities and sets some goals for own development
Ability to follow IT procedures to complete work, but may recommend changes to departmental processes, ability to often prioritize own work; anticipates consequences of actions, potential problems, or opportunities for change
Ability to maintain tasks, projects and activities in the IT system of Record (S-NOW)
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:
Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree and 5 years related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Intermediate certification in area of responsibility
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
CCNA, CCNP or CCVP certification
Salary
Hiring salary range is $80,523 - $92,601
Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education.
