RECRUITMENT:   T he State Highway Administration (SHA) is recruiting for the  Transportation Engineer I (TE I)  position.  This position is open to anyone who meets the  minimum qualifications listed below.  The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill current and future vacancies in this classification throughout the entire agency. Nature of wor k:  This is an entry level position. Employees assigned in the Transportation Engineer Career Program may be responsible in any of the following: assisting in highway design projects, assignments focusing on concept development and project feasibility analyses, applying structural engineering theories, principles, and standards to a variety of transportation structures. This position will work with licensed and unlicensed engineers and technicians to complete engineering tasks related to managing and reviewing projects, working with Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) mapping of the various surveys (including data processing and base map development), conducting/reviewing traffic engineering analyses, designing storm drains, supporting project development highway and highway infrastructure asset management and condition assessments, and applying engineering theories/principles/standards to a variety of construction engineering tasks such as inspecting construction sites, enforcing construction contract terms and conditions, maintaining construction project documentation, and assisting with construction contract management. Eligible candidates will have the opportunity to interview with one or more of the following engineering tracks. Track selection will be asked in the application. Transportation Engineer I (Construction Track) Location: Hanover and SHA District Offices Statewide This is an entry level engineering position in which the incumbent will apply engineering theories, principles, and standards to a variety of construction engineering tasks. In a learning capacity, reviews plans and specifications, performs bridge and roadway construction work inspection, tests, attends various meetings, and prepares supporting documentation under the direction of an experienced engineer. Transportation Engineer I (Transportation Track) Location: Baltimore City, Hanover, or SHA District Offices Statewide Transportation Engineer I's in this track may be assisting in planning, design, and traffic-related functions which could include the following: meeting project goals, developing alternatives, attending public meetings, evaluating design criteria against project constraints, performing constructability reviews, reviewing and designing roadway plans, performing construction inspection for proposed roadway improvement projects, providing traffic/travel demand information, and conducting or reviewing traffic engineering analysis. Transportation Engineer I (Structures Track)  Location: Baltimore City or Hanover Transportation Engineer I's in this track will apply structural engineering theories, principles, and standards to a variety of transportation structures. New engineers will be involved with the design of new bridges, bridge deck replacements, bridge rehabilitation and repairs, culverts, retaining walls, and noise abatement walls, or traffic signal poles, sign structures, and high mast lighting poles. They will also be involved with performing hands-on forensic evaluations of structures, preparing inspection reports, and making repair recommendations. *This job requires course work in Structural Analysis, Steel Design, and Concrete Design. Transportation Engineer I (Hydraulics/Water Resources Track)  Location: Baltimore City This is an entry level engineering position in which the incumbent will be closely supervised in the review and investigation of drainage problems affecting state highways and the hydraulic design of structures carrying waterways. This position may provide design responsibilities for storm drains, storm-water management facilities, and erosion and sediment control plans on state projects. This position may also perform hydrologic and hydraulic studies of structures over streams and rivers, including hydraulic design of bridges and culverts, scour safety determinations, and flooding evaluations. This is a training level position, functioning in a design and support role on a hydraulic team. Transportation Engineer I (Materials Track)  Location: Hanover Transportation Engineer I's in this track will be performing engineering duties in support of project development, highway infrastructure, asset management, construction projects and condition assessments.  In a learning capacity, the position may conduct certification reviews for various materials, test/evaluate  QA/QC materials in  the laboratory as well as in the field, use materials test results in pavement/geotechnical design, perform hands-on forensic evaluations of structures, prepare inspection reports and make repair recommendations under the direction of an experienced engineer, depending on which division they join. The Transportation Engineer I should be able to communicate with contractors, engineers, and OMT personnel as needed to complete work in a clear and efficient manner. This position should be able to review, understand and explain the project documents, specifications, and drawings to the contractors in an effective manner.  The Transportation Engineer I  should be able to attend the pre-construction and progressive meetings, and act as a liaison between the District, OMT, and contractors.
