This Role Is Primarily Responsible For The Project Management, Coordination, Preparation, And Reporting Of Key Financial Deliverables At The Highest Level Of The Company Including:
Financial statement and footnote disclosures for SEC filings and other externally reported information, including the quarterly earnings release.
Monthly internal reporting of consolidated financial results to senior management and the Board of Directors.
Other analysis and special projects as needed, including the analysis and implementation of new SEC rules, and assisting with the month end close and consolidation process.
The position interfaces with business representatives at all levels, in all jurisdictions and business segments, to provide expertise and assistance for accurate and timely reporting. The lead analyst will work closely with teammates and managers on various accounting activities including; preparation and/or review of internal and external financial reports and associated disclosures, coordination and review of data request information submitted by the business units supporting footnotes and financial statements including, the statement of cash flows, preparation and/or review of earnings release information, and review analysis of financial results for reporting to management and the Board of Directors. The lead analyst will also interact frequently with various groups to support business transactions and decisions. This role will work to ensure that reporting meets GAAP and SEC requirements, including the research and implementation of new SEC rules and the preparation of new disclosures required for unique transactions and ongoing business activity. The position will also help to analyze and research ad-hoc requests, develop reporting, and effectively prepare presentations for management review and decision making. This position will build and leverage an extensive network throughout the company, working closely with internal teams within the Controller’s organization as well as Investor Relations, Financial Planning & Analysis, Rates & Regulatory, Legal, Human Resources, Environmental, ESG & Sustainability, and Tax.
This position will work through complex reporting issues; therefore, strong analytical skills and the ability to exercise judgment are essential. Employees at this level work independently and receive minimal guidance while working in a team environment. The lead analyst role requires the knowledge and experience to solve complex problems. Excellent communication and leadership skills are required as the lead analyst will act as a primary resource for less experienced employees. Additionally, the lead analyst role will be responsible for the project management and oversight of multiple deliverables provided by personnel across the company and from third party service providers, requiring organizational skills, effective communication, flexibility, and timely responsiveness.
Responsibilities
Project management, coordination and review of data requests submitted by business units and corporate departments supporting footnotes and the financial statements, including cash flows, and the ability to identify and follow-up on any issues.
Preparation and/or review of materials for other externally reported information including the quarterly earnings release and stand-alone reporting of financial statements for certain non-SEC registrants.
Preparation, review, and analysis of monthly financial results at the highest levels of the organization for internal reporting to senior management and the Board of Directors.
Research and documentation of significant accounting and reporting issues/conclusions, as needed, including the implementation of new SEC rules or required disclosures for unique and complex transactions.
Benchmark peer filings and recommend disclosures that meet SEC requirements.
Prepare updates of SOX control documentation and perform testing of controls, as needed.
Involvement in special projects, as needed, including assistance with month end close and consolidations.
Interact with business unit and corporate management.
Work with internal and external auditors, providing necessary information and answering questions as needed.
Identify process improvements and assist in implementation to produce efficiencies and manage peak workload at all stages of the reporting process.
Required/Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with major in Accounting/Finance or related discipline
Five (5) plus years of increasingly diverse or complex experience in related field in addition to degree
Possesses and applies fundamental accounting and finance concepts, practices, and procedures
Experience with financial applications (i.e., PeopleSoft, HFM, PowerPlan, etc.) and query tool (WebI)
Experience using Microsoft products such as Excel, Word and Power Point
Desired Qualifications
CPA or working toward CPA
Advanced degree, preferably in Accounting
Eight (8) years or more of professional work related experience
Significant experience with financial reporting (GAAP/SEC/FERC)
Previous experience in utility, utility asset or regulatory accounting environment
Previous experience in reviewing and directing the work of others
Public accounting or auditing experience
Knowledge of SEC rules and regulations, including interactive data (XBRL) requirements
Effective written and oral communication, collaboration skills, and demonstrated ability to work in a team environment fostering good relationships with teammates and business partners
Advanced project management, analytical and critical thinking skills – including data analytics
Demonstrated ability to effectively perform at the lead analyst level, including ability to review and direct the work of others, work independently with minimal oversight, manage competing priorities, and adhere to strict deadlines and schedules
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, display flexibility with assignments, and foster good relationships with teammates and business partners
Highly organized with strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to efficiently multi-task within tight deadlines
Willingness to provide and respond to feedback and develop others
Previous development of process improvement and implementation
Experience with financial systems: Wdesk, OneStream; and Advanced Microsoft Office products skills (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Working Conditions
Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to the assigned Duke Energy facility.
Overtime during quarterly peak reporting periods is required
