Director of Genetics Education The Director of Genetics Education (DGE) for the NHGRI Medical Genetics Training Programs plays a critical role in leading and overseeing all aspects of our ACGME-accredited programs. This key leadership position provides a unique opportunity to shape the future of medical genetics education within a dynamic and innovative healthcare environment.

Responsibilities Program Leadership and Administration Contribute to strategic direction and oversight for the training program, ensuring it meets the requirements of ABMGG, ACGME, and other governing entities.

Lead the development and implementation of the curriculum, including didactic sessions, clinical and laboratory rotations, and scholarly activities.

Oversee and evaluate the academic performance and progress of trainees.

Create effective learning opportunities for the program within the available budget and resources. Represent the program at local, regional, and national meetings and conferences.

Trainee Education and Development Coordinate the didactic curriculum including trainee and faculty presentations and graduate courses offered through the Foundation for the Advancement of Education in Sciences (FAES) making changes and updates as necessary related to the growth of the program and field of genetics and genomics.

Lecture in all educational activities.

Prepare an updated annual supplementary in-training exam and biannual board review curriculum targeted to the ABMGG General Examination.

Foster a positive and supportive learning environment for trainees, promoting their professional and personal growth.

Provide mentorship and guidance to residents on career development, research opportunities, and ethical considerations.

Faculty Development Recruit and retain qualified faculty to teach within the training program.

Provide ongoing faculty development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and expertise.

Foster a collaborative and collegial relationship with faculty members.

Research and Scholarly Activity Encourage and support trainee and faculty participation in research and scholarly activities.

Contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of medical genetics and genomics through publications and presentations.

Communication and Collaboration Maintain effective communication with program stakeholders, including trainees, faculty, institutional leadership, and external partners.

Build and maintain strong relationships with collaborators within the institution and the wider genetics community.

For an MD (or equivalent) In addition to leading the didactic component of the training program, the DGE will play a vital role in the clinical realm. The DGE will assist the Genetics Consult Service, providing expert diagnosis and management recommendations for patients referred by other clinicians across the NIH. Furthermore, the DGE will actively engage with other clinical research groups throughout the NIH Clinical Center, offering educational workshops and consultations to enhance their understanding of genetic factors in various disease processes and empower them to confidently manage patients with potential genetic involvement.

For a PhD Beyond expert diagnosis and management, the DGE will provide consultative services to other medical teams on the results of genetic tests. The DGE will engage with labs within NHGRI as well as other institutes and will work closely with clinicians, genetic counselors, and staff scientists to advance personalized medicine at NIH and beyond.

Qualifications Required Active ABMGG board certification with a minimum of 3 years of clinical and/or laboratory genetics experience as an attending and/or in an academic/commercial lab setting.

Excellent teaching and communication skills.

Strong organizational and management skills.

Ability to work effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.

Commitment to graduate education and scholarship.

Preferred Active ABMGG board certification with 5 years of clinical and/or laboratory genetics experience as an attending and/or in an academic/commercial lab setting.

Experience in the conceptualization and creation of training curriculums and/or graduate coursework.

Previous experience in residency and/or program leadership and administration.

Demonstrated success in managing others/direct reports.

Familiarity with ACGME and ABMGG accreditation standards and guidelines.
